Why did the Rockets just get banned from Twitter?

The Houston Rockets’ official Twitter account was suspended Monday, and NBA fans everywhere are scratching their heads.

Sports teams all over the map have become active on social media in recent years, and it’s created some epic Twitter wars. But Monday, the Houston Rockets accomplished something on Twitter that most of us haven’t seen before.

Somehow, the Rockets managed to get their official team Twitter account suspended.

The internet noticed that something was up Monday afternoon and word got around quickly. Predictably enough, plenty of voices weighed in on the mysterious disappearance.

After dismissing the Rockets from the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, the Golden State Warriors — or those associated with them — continued to pick on Houston.

Then, Houston-based politician Ted Cruz poked a little fun at the Rockets’ suspension.

And, of course, this tweet from KFOX14’s Patrick Chalvire speaks for all of Twitter as it tries to get to the bottom of things.

Now, as the day developed, word started to get around about why the account was actually suspended and it sorta ruined the fun. As everyone hoped and waited for some oddball, gossipy reason for the suspension, they found out that the Rockets were actually suspended for copyright issues.

The Rockets issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

“Our Twitter account has been temporarily suspended due to a few prior social media posts with copyrighted music. We are working to correct the issue now.”

Well, that’s no fun. At least the Rockets provided us with some mid-afternoon drama.

As the day went on, it also came out that a few college football and gymnastics teams had their Twitter accounts suspended as well for similar copyright violations. But, of course, it’s much more enjoyable when it’s an NBA team and infamous NBA Twitter can get involved.
