The 2012 NBA Draft is underway and FanSided has assembled a panel of our NBA experts to grade the picks and provide reactions live as the picks come in.

As expected, the New Orleans Hornets snagged Anthony Davis with the #1 overall pick. Let’s take a look at their marks!

Pick 1: New Orleans Hornets

Selection: Anthony Davis

Jack Winter-Saving the Skyhook

What a huge coup for New Orleans. A mere seven months ago, the Hornets were in a state of flux after being forced to trade a franchise player. Today they replace Chris Paul with a new face of the organization, and accompanying Anthony Davis is hope and optimism for basketball this city hasn’t seen in years. The real drama for N.O. tonight comes later, as they choose Davis’ newest teammate at 10.

The most obvious of picks, Davis will need to add some muscle and strength but has tools to be a franchise player when all is said and done. Hornets couldn’t mess this one up – Davis can be a beast.

The only way people would be surprised with the Hornets selection in the 2012 NBA draft was if they had forgotten they were on the clock and missed out on drafting a possible franchise changer. Davis is the real deal; He’s the best defender in the draft, maybe the best rebounder in the draft, and his offensive game is severely underrated. The only question about him heading into the 2012/13 NBA season is: How long will it take him to be named the unanimous Rookie of the Year.
