Golf: Stacy Lewis Shoots 63 To Lead Honda LPGA Thailand

American, Stacy Lewis got it going early in the first round of the Honda LPGA Thailand on Thursday, and fires a -9 under 63 to take a three shot lead over Karine Icher from France. Lewis got it going early with an eagle two on the par 4 third hole at the Siam Country Club’s Pattaya Old Course in Chonburi, Thailand, then put up a hat trick, making the turn at -6 under par 30.

She carded two birdies on the back nine before giving one back at the par three 16th hole. Lewis was on fire, hitting 16 greens in regulation, using only 26 putts enroute to another good outing in the young season. Stacy Lewis won The ISPS Handa last week in Australia. She averaged 266 yards off the tee, hitting 13 of 14 fairways in regulation.

Karine Icher had a bogey free round on Thursday afternoon, hitting 14 of 14 fairways, but her iron play let her down, missing six greens. Her short game bailed her out, taking only 24 strokes with the flat stick.

A group of four girls are tied for third place, including American Gerina Piller, Catroina Matthew from Scotland, along with South Koreans, Inbee Park, and Amy Yang. Piller opened her round with eagle three at the first hole. She played well, carding a -5 under par 31 on the front nine, but stumbled on the back, picking up two bogeys along with two birdies.

Michelle Wie had another poor showing, shooting a 2 over par 74 for the opener. Wie had a lot of bogeys on her card, with the only bright spot coming on the final hole, where she picked up an eagle. She continues to struggle with her driver, hitting only 6 of 14 greens. She’s long off the tee, but no one knows where it is going to land. The youngster from Stanford University spent a lot of time in the sand on Thursday, making 4 of 5 saves from the bunker. She missed the cut last week at The ISPS Handa, and stands to miss it here unless she can make some birdies of Friday.
