Portable Gas Grills Are Making Tailgating Even Easier

It used to be that if truly you wanted to tailgate you only had a couple of options. The first was to load your full size (and often very heavy) grill into the back of a truck and drive it to the game. The other was to bring along one of those small portable grills that sit about six inches off the ground.

While both of those options work (let’s be honest, grilling at a tailgate is always a good thing) they aren’t the most convenient options. If you don’t own a pickup, hauling your large grill from home might not even be an option and the old school portable grills often had too limited of cooking surface to meet the needs of more than a couple of people.

Modern technology has fixed this problem. Now you can get the grilling surface of a more traditional grill, but designed to make taking it on the road easy. I’ve personally had experience with the Coleman Roadtrip Grill (pictured above), but there are similar products available now from most grill makers. Here’s a review of some portable grills from Weber, Char-Broil, and Coleman from megabbq.com.

A true grilling enthusiast will scoff at the idea of a gas grill. I get it, it’s not the perfect grilling experience, but when you’re traveling it’s REALLY convenient. Not only do these grills fold up to make it possible to fit one in the trunk of your car, but they are made out of lighter weight materials to make them easier to transport as well. Depending on your grilling needs, they are available in various sizes and there are even portable charcoal models, but in my opinion if you’re wanting convenience on the road, gas is easier. Not only do you not have to worry about charcoal and lighter fluid, but after you’re done you don’t have to wait for the coals to cool down or disposing of them there in the parking lot.

So if you’re tired of trying to convince your buddy who owns a pickup to haul your grill to the game or are frustrated with never getting to sit back and enjoy your tailgating experience because you’re constantly tending to the rotation of food on the microscopic grilling surface of your old school portable grill, it might be time to look at a portable gas grill. It’s truly the most convenient way to tailgate and they won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

That’s it for this week’s Armchair Quarterback. If you read anything you loved or hated make sure to let me hear about it in the comments below. Enjoy your football!
