The Armchair Quarterback’s Odds And Ends Of The Week

Fantasy Football Player To Start This Week:

Eli Manning – QB – New York Giants

Manning has had an absolutely terrible season and probably isn’t anyone’s regular starter unless you are having horrible injury luck. At this point, Manning is only completing 55.7% of his passes and has thrown 15 interceptions. So why is he my start of the week? Well, mainly because he is facing the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders pass defense has been a real problem this season. In fact, the Raiders have given up the highest completion percentage to opposing QBs in the league to go along with 17 TDs to only 5 INTs. Last week they made Nick Foles look like Peyton Manning. What Oakland does have is a top ten run defense. So look for Eli Manning throw early and often. He’s actually gone two straight games without committing a turnover after his early season turnover spree, so he seems to be righting the ship at this point. Look for him to put up good numbers against Oakland and he would be a good start this week if you just lost Aaron Rodgers to injury.

Beer Review Of The Week:

Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout

Last week I reviewed Young’s Double Chocolate Stout and gave it a very high recommendation. I even labeled it my second favorite stout of all time and promised to reveal my favorite soon. Well, I didn’t make you wait very long. After thinking about it all last week after trying the Young’s, I had to go out and pick up a bottle of Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout. It’s brewed in England at a brewery that dates all the way back to 1758. Quite frankly, it’s the best in the business. It has a fantastic combination of flavors that include roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits. However, unlike Guiness, there is just a touch of carbonation and hops that even the beer out and make it more balanced than it’s more mainstream competitor. It’s not near as strong as the Imperial Stouts that have a high bitterness rating, but for me it’s the perfect middle ground. If I could only have one beer for the rest of my life, it would be this beer. That’s how much I love it. So if you like dark beers, you simply must give this one a try.

My Rating (1-10): 10

Not So Random Thought Of The Week That Does Have Some Relevance:

Normally this space is reserved for a silly random thought of the week that isn’t football related. Not this week. I thought in the wake of the Richie Incognito story it might be nice to close with something that shows the good side of football and what it can do for people. As usual, it’s not a bunch of Pro Bowlers that we should admire. It’s a group of middle school kids that know more about being a good teammate than most NFL players ever will. Check out the video below. It speaks for itself.

Okay, that’s it for this week’s Armchair Quarterback. As usual, if you read something you loved, hated, or you think is just plain wrong, let me hear about it in the comments below.

So until next week, find yourself a comfortable chair and enjoy some football.
