The Armchair Quarterback’s Guide To The NFL: Week 13
The Armchair Quarterback’s Odds And Ends Of The Week
Fantasy Player To Start This Week:
Donnie Avery – WR – Kansas City Chiefs
This is more of a deep sleeper if you are really in need of a waiver pick up to start this week. Donnie Avery hasn’t been worthy of a fantasy start this season, but this week may be different. The Chiefs have made an effort to try and stretch the field more these past two weeks and last week Avery went for 91 yards and a TD. With KC wounded on defense, Peyton Manning could put up a lot of points on the Chiefs. That would mean KC would have to throw the ball a lot while playing from behind and Denver has given up some passing yards this season. Avery is KC’s only deep threat so any long passes will go his way.
Beer Review Of The Week:
Sierra Nevada’s Flipside Seasonal Red IPA
I’m not a huge IPA (Indian Pale Ale) drinker. I like hops, but the super hoppy beers that are very popular these days are just a little too bitter for my taste. I prefer something with a little more balance. Sierra Nevada has some very bitter beers for you hop lovers out there, but I heard that this seasonal Red IPA was a little more subtle, so I gave it a shot. I’m glad I did. This is my kind of IPA. It has a solid hops presence, with both citrus and pine coming through. However, there is also some malt balance that not all IPAs have. There is even a slight caramel taste to the malts. You wouldn’t think that would work with the citrus and pine hops, but I enjoyed it. Also, just as a personal side note, I drank about half of it ice cold out of the fridge and then let it warm a little before I finished it. I actually preferred it after it had warmed slightly. I felt it brought out the malts a little more and gave it more balance. I still can’t rate it as high as my favorite stouts and brown ales, but for an IPA, this was good for me.
My Rating (1-10): 8
A Final Thought For The Holiday Week:
Instead of a random thought, I thought I’d say a couple words about one of my very favorite holidays. A few weeks back I was a bit of a curmudgeon with my take on Halloween. You’ll find none of that this week. Thanksgiving features three of my favorite things in this world: food, football, and family. So this week I just simply want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. Yes, eat yourself into a turkey coma and eat all the pie you can handle. Yes, watch as much football as you can possibly squeeze into the next few days. However, make sure you make time for the loved ones in your life as well. You might even consider stepping away from the game on TV (gasp!) and go throw the ball around with the family in the yard. I think anyone reading this post is obviously a big football fan, but in the spectrum of things you are thankful for, a game you watch on TV (no matter how much we love it) doesn’t compare to the people that you share your life with. So make sure you make time for them this week (you can always schedule it around the games you want to watch the most).
That’s it for this Thanksgiving edition of the Armchair Quarterback. As usual, if you read something you loved, hated, or you think is just plain wrong, let me hear about it in the comments below.
Until next week, have a very Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy all the food, football, and family you can!
