During the first block on Monday’s Dan Patrick Show recapping the Wildcard Weekend that was the NFL playoffs, Patrick broke a bit of a bombshell on the show when he said, “they’re gonna add another wildcard. I was told this Saturday, the NFL will add another wildcard team in the AFC and the NFC next year.”

Patrick continued saying the NFL won’t be able to expand the regular season to 18 games, but they can expand the playoffs. However, Patrick said he preferred the NFL format as it because if you expand the playoffs it would only be a matter of time until the product becomes diluted with more and more teams added.

He joked that soon enough if you keep expanding the playoffs that eventually the Dallas Cowboys will get into the playoffs. The Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens would have been in favor of the expanded playoffs this year when they won 10 games and missed the postseason.

The last three years a team that won on Wildcard Weekend ended up winning the Super Bowl.
