Beer Review Of The Week:

BJ’s Brewhouse Goliath Imperial Red Ale

Normally my weekly beer review is on a craft beer that can be purchased at your local liquor store, but this week I’m featuring a beer that I tried while out to eat this week. BJ’s Brewhouse has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants with both excellent food and drink choices. While out for dinner with my family I couldn’t resist trying their limited time Brewmaster’s Reserve offering, the Goliath Imperial Red. I’m a fan of red ales in general. For non-craft beer enthusiasts, the most main stream red ale offering is Killians Irish Red. However, the “Imperial” label implies that this will have a stronger hop presence (giving it more “bite” or bitterness) than a traditional red ale. Apparently the beer was first offered last spring and was a big enough hit that they are bringing it back this year with the “Goliath” name added to it. I was impressed. It had a very pronounced but not overwhelming taste. The malts gave the beer enough depth (and a little sweetness) to balance out the hop bitterness very nicely. If you have a BJ’s Brewhouse in your area and think you might be a fan of this type of beer I highly recommend giving it a try while it’s still available.

My Rating (1-10): 8.5

A Way To Pass The Time This Week:

Look, I could try to come up with something different than last week, but anyone that’s a big enough sports fan to be reading this blog is likely to be watching the second week of March Madness. It’s been an absolute fantastic tournament so far other than Wichita State getting knocked out by Kentucky. I made the mistake of making a Twitter avatar bet with Fansided’s Rams sight editor (and huge Kentucky fan) Nathan Kearns. You can see how that worked out for me (@LyleGraversen). Anyway, if the second week of the tournament is as good as the first it should be more than enough to help NFL fans pass the time this week.

Final Thought Of The Week:

Normally I end this column with a “Rant of the Week” but I think I got all the snakiness out of my system addressing the NFL’s goalpost dunking ban. Also, I was very moved this week by the photo below.

You’ve probably already seen it by this point, but it’s a photo of Hall of Fame Bills quarterback Jim Kelly with his daughter as he battles cancer. Unfortunately, word spread on Wednesday that Kelly’s cancer is in areas where surgery is not an option and they will have to treat it with radiation and chemo therapy. Cancer is a nasty, brutal disease that effects so many. My guess is that almost every person reading this has someone in their lives that has battled it. I hope everyone can join me in sending thoughts and prayers to Kelly and his family. Stay strong Jim, you’ve got a lot of NFL fans from all over the country in your corner. Also, it’s a good reminder of what’s truly important in life. Make sure you hug those you love extra tight next time you see them.

That does it for this week’s Armchair Quarterback. Enjoy the March Madness games this weekend and if the team you’re cheering for wins it’s okay for you to go crazy and celebrate. You could even pretend to dunk something like it was a basketball. After all, these aren’t professionals that are playing. They aren’t getting paid (yet) so it’s okay to have a little fun.

Thanks for reading.
