Red Sox pitcher Burke Badenhop had a little trouble on this play against the Twins Wednesday. He throws the ball away trying to go to second, then falls backward in the process of getting off the mound to cover the plate.

For some reason, Badenhop’s struggles struck Twins announcer Dick Bremer as hilarious.

It’s sort of funny watching the pitcher throw the ball away then fall down, but is it really that funny? Why is Dick Bremer so amused by this display of slapstick comedy?

I think I know the answer. Bremer mentions in the clip that he’s had to hear for years how pitchers are the best athletes on the field. So it’s funny to him watching a pitcher completely fail at simple athletic things.

I see what’s going on here. Bremer is laughing at Badenhop but he’s really expressing intense hostility toward his broadcast partner Bert Blyleven, who obviously has driven him nuts with his talk about pitchers being the best athletes on the field.

On the outside Bremer is laughing, but inside he’s stabbing Bert Blyleven in the heart with a giant knife.

Yeah, Blyleven is pretty annoying. I’m surprised Bremer isn’t a total basket case by now.
