3. Boston Celtics

Possible Assets: Jared Sullinger, Kelly Olynyk, 2014 NBA Draft pick (top-6 pick, 18th pick), Futures (LAC 1st 2015, BOS 1st 2015, BOS 1st 2016, BKN 1st 2016, BOS/BKN 1st 2017, BKN 1st 2018)

When looking over the list of assets each possible Timberwolves trade partner had, the Boston Celtics lengthy list stuck out the most. They have loads of draft picks going forward, some that have the potential to be sneaky good (Brooklyn picks). The only thing they’re missing is a mid-level rising star like what the Washington Wizards have in Bradley Beal. If they had such, they’d easily be number one on this list as the combination of talent + picks is a deal most general manager’s would die for. Some have suggested that the Celtics dangle Rajon Rondo, but it makes little basketball sense considering Ricky Rubio is only 23 years old and will be a much cheaper option at point guard.

Like the Lakers, the Celtics chances in this deal could hinge on where the ping pong balls fall. If they fall in the top-4, they may field the best overall offer, but there are no guarantees as the lottery is unpredictable toward the marquee picks. If Boston happens to fall after four, a package of an Aaron Gordon, Noah Vonleh-ish talent would still work, but it wouldn’t be an enticing as a few others.
