The Voice Finale results: Josh Kaufman wins season 6
By Josh Sanchez
On Tuesday night, season 6 of the NBC hit show The Voice came to a close with the live finale. This year, the final vote came down to Christina Grimmie of Team Adam, Josh Kaufman of Team Usher and Jake Worthington of Team Blake.
As most singing competitions generally seem to do with their live finales, we had to sit through an hour worth of replays from last night’s performances which included a beautiful rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” by Christina, “A Country Boy Can Survive” from Jake and that, um, interesting rendition of “Set Fire to the Rain” by Josh.
The Voice finale took the pre-recorded approach to the first hour since it was going head-to-head with the performances from the American Idol finale.
Finally, when the clock struck 9 p.m. ET, the true countdown to learning which contestant’s dream would become a reality began.
The finale began with a live performance from One Republic, as they sang their new hit song “Love Runs Out.”
After the performance, Adam Levine announced that win or lose, he would be signing Christina Grimmie to his record label so it was a great start to the night for the 20 year old from New Jersey.
Following the news, Jake Worthington brought back Kat Perkins, Kristen Merlin, Audra McLaughlin, Ryan Whyte Maloney and Morgan Wallen to perform “Summertime” by Kenny Chesney.
The finale rolled on with a fantastic performance of “All of the Stars” from Christina Grimmie and Ed Sheeran. While it doesn’t count for anything in the grand scheme of the show, the Grimmie-Sheeran performance was one of the best vocal performances of any singing competition in recent memory.
With plenty of time left to kill, we got more filler performances as past contestants Delvin Choice, Morgan Wallen, Jake Barker, Patrick Thomson, Stevie Jo and returned to the stage to give us a rendition of Hall and Oates’ “She’s Gone.”
Usher provided a little bit of humor as we got closer to the announcement, with some sort of “life advice” segment before country music singer Justin Moore gave us another live performance.
In one of the final performances, Josh Kaufman brought back T.J., Stevie Jo and Sisaundra Lewis to perform “Am I Wrong” with Nico and Vinz.
With an hour of the live finale left to go, we were treated by another great performance from Ed Sheeran with “Sing.”
Past finalists continued to return to The Voice stage for group performances as we got the final hour rolling, with some performances that reminded us all just how much the producers decided to drag the finale on.
We got another look at the finalists midway through the final hour, as they and the coaches gave their final confession to let the world know what bringing home The Voice title would mean for them. The contestants even got to choose their own KIA vehicle from the 2014 line for being a finalist.
Robin Thicke came to The Voice stage to since “Get Her Back” with finalist Josh Kaufman. The superstars kept coming as Tim McGraw gave the crowd a show right after Thicke and Kaufman wrapped up their duet.
With just twenty minutes until the result was read, Christina Grimmie brought back Bria Kelly, Tess Boyer and Jake Baker for one last hurrah on The Voice stage with a performance of “Team” by Lorde.
Once that performance was in the books, we were treated to a performance from Coldplay as we entered the ten minute mark until the results would be read.
Carson Daly lined the three finalists up in the middle of the stage for the results to be read, as the music and drama continued to build.
Third place went to Christina Grimme.
It was down to Jake Worthington and Josh Kaufman and the winner of the voice was…
Team Usher’s Josh Kaufman.
It was the first time in the show’s history that the winner was not from Team Adam or Team Blake.
