Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid squared off in Lisbon, Portugal in the UEFA Champions League final. These two rivals knew each other well and both were looking for historic wins in the big game. It would be Atletico’s first European Cup and for their cross town rivals Real Madrid, their tenth.
Atletico Madrid struck first in the 36th minute of the game on an error from goal keeper Iker Casillas. A ball was coming into the box and Casillas came off his line to play the ball, but Atletico’s Diego Godin was able to get a head on it and put it over Casillas. The keeper was left scrambling back to his goal line to try and prevent it from going in but couldn’t get their fast enough and just like that Real Madrid was playing form behind.
In stoppage time, Sergio Ramos buried a header off a corner kick to force extra time. That breathed life into Real Madrid and sucked the wind and momentum out of Atletico Madrid.
