Older players sometimes get hung with really unflattering nicknames by their more youthful teammates, monikers like “Pops” and “Old Man” and sometimes even “Methuzelah.”

Ray Allen has a new nickname courtesy of his younger teammates on the Heat, but it’s not as demeaning as those other nics. They call Ray Allen “The Committee.”

Allen explained the nickname to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports. “They make fun of me and say sly little things about my age like I played with Moses Malone,” the veteran guard said (via Bleacher Report). “It’s funny. But they all respect me and ask me questions…If there is anything that needs to be resolved they say, ‘Committee, what’s your take on this?'”

Whenever there’s a disagreement in the Heat locker room they call Ray Allen over, and when he finally gets there – cause he’s so damn OLD you see – they sit in silence while Ray renders a Solomon-like judgment.

For some reason I’m picturing Allen like one of the old men from Coming to America. Is that wrong?

No, I’m kidding. It’s actually nice seeing young men show so much respect to one of their elders. Even if, you know, Ray Allen isn’t actually that old when you think about it.

Obviously he’s old in basketball player years but compared to most true wise men, dude is a whippersnapper. Yoda was like, what, 800? 900? Ray is going to have to live a long time and become a lot more stumpy and wizened before he becomes truly Yoda-like.
