Smaller Fish

If the Heat want to go after a number of role players rather than swing for one big potential star, there are a number of players still on the market who might intrigue. Ed Davis has remained an intriguing bundle of length and athleticism since he entered the league four years ago, but he’s never been able to break out of the 20-24 minute per game “energy and defense” role. Mike Scott had some great moments especially in the playoffs, as a swing forward with a nice shooting touch. He could prove a find in a more featured role. If Miami wants to add just shooting, Anthony Morrow remains one of the league’s best and should be available on a reasonable deal. Xavier Henry rescued his career in Los Angeles last season, and could be a stopgap wing scorer.

The Heat could also decide to ride out the last few years of Wade’s career with some solid veterans on shorter contracts. Shawn Marion isn’t quite “The Matrix” anymore, but provided some valuable all court minutes for Dallas the last few years. DeJuan Blair is another energy and rebounding option.

Finally, the Heat need a point guard. That is unless they envision Cole as their full-time starter. Perhaps now that James has gone and the vibe and expectation of the team is different they can examine bringing back Chalmers? Or has that bridge been well and truly burned? If that is the case, does Napier start as a rookie? Does Miami settle on a D.J. Augustin or a Shelvin Mack (himself a restricted free agent Atlanta might want to keep?) All things considered, if the Heat are not able to make a big splash for a top line star-in-the-making, Chalmers might be the best of a bunch of bad options.
