NFL: Bill Belichick and the five best coaches in the league
By Bryce Olin
4. John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens
Record: 62-34
John has never had a losing season in his entire NFL head coaching career. That’s nearly impossible. Even the all-time greats struggle to find their footing early in their coaching careers, but not John Harbaugh. After winning the 2013 Super Bowl against his brother, Jim, and the 49ers, the Ravens had their worst season under Harbaugh, settling for an 8-8 record. Let’s not pretend that’s bad. Obviously, Harbaugh and the Ravens would love to be better, but there are a good handful of teams around the league who’d kill to go .500 in a season. Jacksonville? Oakland? Cleveland Browns, anyone?
Even more impressively, Harbaugh led the Ravens to a playoff victory in his first five seasons as a coach. That’s the beginning of Hall-of-Fame worthy. It’ll take a few more years of successful seasons and another Super Bowl ring or two.
Harbuagh has never been in a rebuilding situation or coached a bad team. His Ravens teams have always had top talent with guys like Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Anquan Boldin, and the list goes on and on and on and on and on… Harbuagh is great because he routinely puts those guys in a position to win. He’s one of the great motivators around the NFL, and he gets the most out of his guys. That’s why he’s one a top-4 coach in the NFL.
