5. Moises Alou, Montreal Expos
The Deal: On Aug. 8, 1990, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired left-hander Zane Smith from the Montreal Expos for Class A third baseman Willie Greene, right-hander Scott Ruskin and a PTBNL.
The PTBNL: Young outfielder Moises Alou was sent to Montreal eight days later, Aug. 16, 1990.
Alou, 24 at the time of the trade, didn’t get a chance to make an immediate impression, playing just 14 games before he was shut down with a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the entire 1991 season.
He bounced back to hit .282/.328/.455 in 115 games in 1992, with nine homers, 56 RBI and 16 stolen bases, finishing runner-up to Eric Karros of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Rookie of the Year voting.
Alou sustained a horrific ankle injury in 1993. He returned in 1994, but never had the same speed as he had before.
As the Expos were rolling to baseball’s best record before the strike shut down the 1994 season in August, Alou hit .339/.397/.592 with 22 homers and 78 RBI in 107 games, making his first All-Star Game and finishing third in the MVP voting.
Alou played in Montreal through the 1996 season before he left as a free agent to sign with the Florida Marlins in December 1996.
In a 17-year career, Alou also played for the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and New York Mets, retiring after the 2008 season.
