1. Chris Paul:

2013-14 Stat Line: 62 games, 35.0 MPG, 19.1 PPG, 10.7 APG, 4.3 RPG, 2.5 SPG, .467/.368/.855 shooting, 25.9 PER

As far as pure point guards are concerned, it doesn’t get any better than Chris Paul. He doesn’t attack the basket with the same wonderful reckless abandon as Russell Westbrook. He’s not the pure shooter that Stephen Curry is and he’s not the crafty pick and roll player that Goran Dragic is. But CP3 is the best floor general in the league, an all-around talent who defends his position with the best of them, orchestrates his offense and can score or find open teammates for easy looks at any time.

Paul led the league in assists and steals last season. He also had the sixth highest Player Efficiency Rating and the highest among point guards. Paul’s flashiest days are behind him, but fundamentally, there still isn’t a better point guard in the league. It may not show up on the stat sheet every night, but the Los Angeles Clippers would be completely lost without him.

It’s no coincidence that the Clippers have seemingly swapped bodies with the Los Angeles Lakers following Paul’s arrival in Lob City. Blake Griffin was the most important player in Los Angeles last season, but Chris Paul has undoubtedly played some part in his development into one of the league’s best power forwards. As long as CP3 continues to stay healthy, it’d hard to see anyone deserving the No. 1 spot more than him.
