Stephen Hill, New York Jets wide receiver

When he entered the NFL, Hill drew comparisons to fellow receivers Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas because they all had size and speed in common, and the three hail from Georgia Tech. That’s strictly where the resemblance ends, however.

Hill has been an utter disappointment for the Jets, who begrudgingly give the third-year wideout chance after chance to claim a starting spot. In 23 games over the past two seasons, he’s caught just 45 passes for 594 yards and four touchdowns. During that timespan, he’s also battled various injuries and a seemingly incurable case of butterfingers.

With Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley and David Nelson locked into prominent roles, Hill is presumably no better than fourth on the Jets’ depth chart. Barring a fantastic preseason, coach Rex Ryan may opt to end the experiment and send Hill elsewhere. He might be better off as a complementary player in an already established, high-powered offense.
