The Baltimore Orioles pulled out one of their most impressive victories of the season on Monday night when they defeated the Chicago White Sox by a final score of 8-2. Before it was a blowout victory, it was a tight game in which the Orioles were scraping for each and every opportunity to outlast Chicago’s ace Chris Sale.

A showdown with a guy like Sale doesn’t just place pressure on the offense to find ways to score runs. It also puts run prevention at a premium. As long as a legit ace is on the mound for the opposing team, there is a smaller margin for error when it comes to allowing that team to score.

With just a one run lead and trying to hang on for a road victory, the Orioles found themselves in a tough situation in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Bud Norris had put one runner on and gave up a shot off the bat of Conor Gillaspie.

It looked like this would be the blow to undo all the hard work that the Orioles had done to take the lead against Sale. Thanks to Nick Markakis, however, that would not be the case.

Markakis sprinted to the right field wall, timed his jump perfectly, and robbed the home run. Even if it was going to just fall short of leaving the yard, this would have been an extra base hit and likely would have tied the game.
