The Cincinnati Bengals earned their first victory of the preseason on Sunday night when they took down the Arizona Cardinals 19-13.

More from Arizona Cardinals

This game featured two of the league’s top defenses in 2013 – the Bengals were third in total defense while the Cardinals were sixth – and it showed in the first half. Neither team could get much of anything going and the only touchdown came when veteran cornerback Terence Newman picked off Cardinals’ quarterback Carson Palmer and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown. Palmer was atrocious, finishing the game seven-of-19 for 92 yards. Bengals’ quarterback Andy Dalton was much better than Palmer, going 13-of-21 for 157 yards but the Bengals did not find the end zone on offense all night and held a 13-3 lead at the half.

The Cardinals cut the lead to a touchdown with a field goal in the third quarter and tied the game at 13 late in the third quarter when Drew Stanton found rookie John Brown on a 30-yard touchdown. The speedy Brown has been, a third round pick in the 2014 draft out of Pittsburgh State, has been very impressive and had four receptions for 56 yards on the night.

The Bengals got two more field goals in the fourth quarter and kept the Cardinals off of the scoreboard to earn a 19-13 victory.

Cedric Peerman led the Bengals in rushing, gaining 54 yards on six attempts while Andre Elligton had 46 yards on nine carries for the Cardinals. Star receivers A.J. Green (five receptions for 53 yards) and Larry Fitzgerald (three receptions for 71 yards) look ready for the season to begin.

The Bengals will close out the preseason when they host the Indianapolis Colts Thursday night while the Cardinals will travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers.
