NFL: 10 best backup quarterback situations
By Bryce Olin
1. Denver Broncos: Brock Osweiler
Brock Osweiler has the best job of any backup quarterback, and it’s not really that close.
Yes, Peyton Manning could get injured at any moment, but Manning gets hit far less than other quarterbacks because he gets the ball out of his hand so quickly most of the time. The Broncos allowed the lowest sack total in the league last season, and I’m anticipating a similar result in 2014. With that, the chance of Manning getting injured is less than other quarterbacks, which means Osweiler likely will only have to play when the Broncos are up by 50-plus points.
Plus, if for some reason Manning is injured, there is no pressure on Osweiler to actually do anything remotely close to what Manning could do. Even if Osweiler plays out of his mind, he will never be as good as Manning, not even close. With such big shoes to fill, no one is going expect anything of Osweiler, which is the best case scenario for any quarterback thrown into the fire.
If Osweiler wants to start in the NFL at some point, he also has the opportunity to learn from, possibly, the best and smartest quarterback of all-time. Denver has the best backup quarterback situation in the league, hands down.
