Club America vs Pumas final score:
Club America and Pumas UNAM squared off on Saturday evening in Week 7 of the 2014 Apertura at Estadio Azteca.
When the final whistle blew, it was Pumas UNAM who handed Club America their first loss of the Apertura thanks to a late goal from Dante Lopez.
Entering today’s match, Las Aguilas were sitting at the top of the Liga MX table thanks to a hot start to the tournament. Pumas, meanwhile, had a lot of work to do if they wanted to position themselves for a late playoff push as they came into Week 7 sitting in next-to-last place ahead of only Monarcas Morelia.
In the first half, possession was very even.
However, Club America was outshooting Pumas and had more opportunities to find the net. Unfortunately for Las Aguilas, we entered halftime with a zero to zero draw.
In the second half, the match remained even.
Club America was again getting more shot opportunities, but they were unable to convert. Pumas’ counter attacks would always fall apart in the final third.
Las Aguilas got another opportunity as time started to dwindle down, when Jose Carlos Van Rankin picked up a yellow card for Pumas just outside of the box. Unfortunately for Club America, they did not get a high quality ball and the opportunity was squandered.
Just a few minutes later, Ismael Sosa drew a yellow card of his own thanks to a hard and unnecessary challenge of Club America’s Miguel Layun in the midfield.
Pumas had their greatest opportunity of the match with just ten minutes to go, with Eduardo Herrera getting a wide open look in the middle of the box. However, he was unable to find his balance and booted the ball over the crossbar. Club America answered with a near goal of their own, but Martin Zuniga sent the ball just wide right.
When it appeared that we were headed for a scoreless draw, Dante Lopez found the back of the net on a deflected shot to score the game-winner for Pumas UNAM.
