On Tuesday, Maryland unveiled new “Star Spangled” uniforms for its game against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
The uniforms are designed to honor the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812.
Under Armour has designed something we aren’t likely to forget anytime soon, as you can see from the photos released via Maryland football’s Twitter account:
ESPN’s College GameDay account has a great look at the details of the uniform too:
While Maryland and many other college’s have gone the patriotic before, this is perhaps the most dramatic representation of that. Maryland outlines the details of the poem featured on the uniform and how the military tradition of back then will be honored.
"The uniforms highlight the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry,“ which is inscribed onto the jersey sleeve, helmet, and footwear. The logo on the helmet and pant features the outline of Fort McHenry and an image of the famous flag that flew through the night of the Battle, which inspired our national anthem. Additionally, team captains will don red belts as American military captains did during the Battle."
This is a jarring design to say the least, but one that is perhaps the most respectful of the tradition and pride that Maryland natives feel.
