MLB: What to watch when your team is eliminated
By Ed Carroll
Watch Derek Jeter play one more time
Well, this one probably works for all but Red Sox fans. Still, even if you aren’t a Yankee fan, you have to respect Jeter’s career. Yes, he’s certainly been overrated in some aspects of his game (particularly his defense, which has been quite poor for a shortstop for a long time now), but Jeter is a sure-fire Hall of Famer, likely a first-ballot one.
The debate on whether Jeter is a unanimous Hall of Famer (something that’s never happened before, not even with universally hailed greats such as Babe Ruth), is for another time (maybe while you and a friend are watching Jeter play, eh?), but you should absolutely take this last opportunity to see the Captain play the game.
Love him or loathe him, Jeets has been a staple of Major League Baseball since 1996 (though he did debut in 1995), and even though the case can be made he probably held on longer than he should have (and the Yankees have almost assuredly been overpaying him, compared to his on-the-field value, for the past few years), Jeter is a player who has defined baseball for a generation. If you don’t have kids now, you’ll tell your kids how you watched him back in the day, and the horrors he’d do to your favorite team. If you have kids now (and they like baseball), sit down and enjoy the last days of a legend together.
