NFL Overreactions Week 2: Jets one-up the Giants choke
Browns to come up with witty trademark after Hoyer proves he can effectively play quarterback
The Cleveland Browns are deciding to trademark either #BrianFootball or #HoyerBall after Brian Hoyer led the Browns to a come-from-behind win against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Even though #JohnnyFootball made his debut because the Browns wanted to give their fans something to cheer about, Hoyer turned out to be the man that can actually make the Browns seem like an NFL team this season, and not just the made-up team from that movie nobody watched.
Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer got the win this time.
Hoyer led the Browns on a game-winning drive in Cleveland’s 26-24 win over New Orleans in the Browns’ home opener on Sunday, making a case that the second half rally everyone witnessed against the Steelers may not have been a fluke after all.
Hoyer drove the Browns 85 yards in 14 plays in the final 2:46 on the final drive that was capped by Billy Cundiff’s 29-yard field goal. He went 24-for-40 for 204 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by a key 28-yard pass to Andrew Hawkins, who caught the ball falling backwards with 13 seconds left in the game.
Hoyer was 8-for-11 for 77 yards on that Browns’ game-winning drive.
The Saints had a rally of their own going in the game, coming back from a 13-point hole to take the lead with 12:12 left after Mark Ingram’s one-yard touchdown run.
Rookie Johnny Manziel made his debut on Sunday, getting three plays that did more harm to the Browns than good. On the first play, Manziel ran a read-option from the pistol, handing off to Isaiah Crowell for a gain of three, then handing off to Crowell again which went nowhere, then ran a play-action on a second-and-13, throwing an incomplete pass to fullback Ray Agnew toward the sidelines. The ball hung up in the air, allowing safety Jairus Byrd to hit Agnew and knock the ball out.
With the Browns at a surging 1-1, Hoyer’s performance today and in the second half last week should let him keep the starting job for another two weeks.
