It Rhymes With Duck

Get your head out of the gutter right now.

The San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks game was the perfect example of how much a role luck plays in the outcome of NFL games.

In this matchup there were five fumbles and four of the them were recovered by the Chargers — three were their own and two by the Seahawks.

The least surprising news to take from the sentence above is San Diego went on for a 30-21 win at Qualcomm Stadium. Nothing about the victory is shocking, the Chargers are a good football team and Seattle isn’t the powerhouse they’ve been at home on the road.

San Diego ran 75 plays to Seattle’s 40. San Diego had the ball for 42 minutes and 15 seconds to Seattle’s 17 minutes and 45 seconds. Football isn’t a game of who runs more plays or has the ball longer, it’s who scores the most points. The Seahawks were still able to pop eight yards a carry and Russell Wilson threw two touchdown passes.

The Chargers methodically picked up 10-17 third downs to keep the chains moving and sustain drives. Some of that wouldn’t have been possible without getting their fumble luck.

San Diego deserved to win the game, they outplayed the defending champion Seahawks. One or two balls bouncing in a different direction might have swung the game in a different direction.
