4. San Francisco 49ers

After destroying the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, the San Francisco 49ers jumped out to a 17-0 lead on Sunday night against the Chicago Bears. What happened after that was utterly humiliating.

Honestly, I was surprised the 49ers played so well to start the game against the Bears. Before the season, I had listed the 49ers in my column as one of the underachievers for this season. Plus, I thought the Bears were going to be pretty good this season.

Early on against the Bears, the 49ers looked flat-out dominant. The defense was energized and flying around stopping any offense the Bears could muster. It helped that Bears’ top receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery weren’t 100 percent for the game and didn’t do much in the first half.

Then, it all changed.

In Jim Harbaugh’s first three seasons as coach, I don’t think I’ve seen the 49ers as undisciplined as they were Sunday night against the Bears. After taking a 17-7 lead into halftime and 20-7 lead into the fourth quarter, the 49ers were outscored 21-0 in the fourth quarter.

Instead of running the football and letting the defense do its job, quarterback Colin Kaepernick made mistake after mistake forcing the ball down the field and threw three interceptions in the game. Kaepernick had four turnovers in the game.

The 49ers were also penalized 16 times for a total of 118 yards in the game.

It will be interesting to see how the 49ers respond next week, but I think this is a sign of much bigger problems.
