Bottoms Up for NFL Week 2: New Bills paying off
4. NFC West: Washington Redskins (1-1)
Following a frustrating 17-6 loss at Houston, Jay Gruden got his first win as an NFL head coach by pulling away from the Jacksonville Jaguars, 41-10.
Now let’s see how long starting quarterback Robert Griffin III is on the shelf. The third-year pro was off to a good start last Sunday but is now on the mend with a dislocated ankle (as analyzed by ESPN.com’s Stephania Bell). Fellow third-year signal-caller Kirk Cousins takes over as the team gets ready for its first divisional game of 2014.
Of course, lost in the discussion regarding RGIII and KCI has been the early play of a defensive unit that has allowed just two offensive touchdowns in as many games.
Now the Redskins will attempt to what they couldn’t last season: Win a game vs. an NFC East rival.
Week 3: at Philadelphia Eagles
3. AFC North: Cleveland Browns (1-1)
Ah, the life of Brian.
Hoyer, that is.
After nearly rallying the Cleveland Browns to a win at Pittsburgh, the young but improving quarterback drove his team 85 yards in 14 plays in less than three minutes to beat the visiting New Orleans Saints, 26-24.
It ended the team’s eight-game losing streak dating back to last season and an offense that entered the season with more questions than answers is beginning to round into form thanks to the play of rookie running back Terrance West, wideout Andrew Hawkins, to name a few. Keep in mind that starters such as running back Ben Tate and tight end Jordan Cameron were out last week and the team responded in a big way.
Coming to town this week are the Ravens, whom the Browns defeated last season in Cleveland—ending an 11-game losing streak to Baltimore in the process. A win over a divisional rival at home is not only crucial, but it would be a nice way for Mike Pettine’s club to head into the off week.
