NFL: 5 teams who are already on the brink this season
New Orleans Saints
The Saints were a lot of people’s choice to dethrone the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Perhaps we should look at the Saints and see them for what they are, and not for what they were.
Everyone loves the Saints. They see Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham and the high-octane offense and they expect a lot. The truth of the matter is that over their last 15 games, the Saints are 7-8.
Rob Ryan was hired to improve a defense that two years ago was one of the worst in NFL history. He did a good job for most of last season, but then the defense regressed.
This season, the defense is downright bad. So far in 2014, they are 30th in total defense, last against the pass, 29th in sacks per pass play, 27th in third-down efficiency and 31st in points allowed. Those are some pretty ugly numbers.
It got so bad that head coach Sean Payton and Ryan were in a screaming match on the sidelines during last week’s loss to the Cleveland Browns.
The Saints allowed Brian Hoyer to take his offense 85 yards for a game-winning field goal. This was an offense that was minus Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron, the top two targets for Cleveland. That is all you need to know about how bad things are for the Saints.
