Tommy Kelly of the Arizona Cardinals blocked a critical field goal attempt in the second half of their Week 3 home game against the San Francisco 49ers. Only later did he learn that if the 49ers holder or kicker had looked outside of the formation, they’d have seen enough daylight to run a successful fake thanks to the Cardinals fielding a unit that was two men short.

“They could’ve just raised up and ran the ball over there where Pat (Peterson) was at,” Kelly said per ESPN. ““We could’ve done nothing about it. They would’ve trampled Pat P., that’s all that would’ve happened.”

At least we know Pat P. is appreciative of the special teams oversight.

Instead of running any kind of fake, the Niners lined up for the kick and had it blocked by Kelly. The 49ers never got close enough to score for the rest of the game.

The field goal would have made the score 20-17 Cardinals, but instead Arizona held onto the ball after the blocked field goal and the Cardinals defense did the rest of the work in a 23-14 Arizona win.
