2. Atlanta Hawks

2013 record: 38-44

Projected 2014 wins: 40.5

Bet the over.

People forget that the Hawks were the third best team in the Eastern Conference last season before being decimated by injuries. The very underrated Al Horford missed 53 games, which was then compounded upon by injuries to Pero Antic, Paul Millsap, and Kyle Korver. And even after all that, they still made the playoffs and played well in their first round series loss to the Pacers.

I really like what Atlanta is building. They’re shooting to be Spurs East, running lots of pick and roll and shooting a lot of threes. Barring another injury disaster, they’re going to be in the playoffs again. Of course, Horford does have a history of injuries, and so last season can’t be written off as some aberration, but even so, it’s difficult to imagine Atlanta having the widespread injury issues they did a year ago.

The Eastern Conference is better as a whole, but still not great. Atlanta should be one of the six best teams in the conference. They don’t have the same on-court question marks as the Pacers, Nets, Knicks, and Heat. It’s really just a matter of health and I believe they’ll stay relatively healthy. The over should be easy money here.
