Washington Wizards forward Martell Webster still has time left on his contract, but he’s already thinking about when he’s going to retire from the game.

Wizards small forward Martell Webster has been a big factor in the Wizards turnaround in the last few seasons. Webster played in all of the Wizards playoff games last year and looks to be a major factor in the Wizards plan for this season. However, Webster has had an injury history in his career and has had to endure three surgeries on his back in the last four years. Because of those back problems it seems as though Webster will have his career shortened.

He talked to the Washington Post yesterday and says he plans to call it a career when his current contract expires.

"“I know this game is probably not going to be the healthiest thing for me if I try to stretch it out as much as a possibly can. So I intend to really give everything I got for these last three years of my contract and probably walk away from this game so I can be healthy.”"

The veteran added that he loves the game but doesn’t want to hang around beyond his expiration date as a talented player.

"“I’ve always wanted to retire young. I love this game and I respect this game, but I only want to be in it as long as I can be effective and as long as I can feel comfortable.”"

Martell Webster will be 30 years old when his current three year contract with the Wizards expires, and while that may seem very young for retirement, with his health concerns it may be the best option for Webster moving forward. Webster has had a 10 year career in the NBA after entering the draft straight out of high school and has earned a total of $33 million during his career.
