LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles

Over at Sports on Earth this week, I took a stab at trying to parse what is going on with LeSean McCoy because right now he is struggling badly.

His 2.7 yards per carry is, by far, his worst average ever and 192 yards and one touchdown is not what was expected from a guy who swore up and down he was the best running back in the NFL.

McCoy’s struggles are hurting the overall offense, though as I point out in my piece, the massive issues Nick Foles seems to be having so far isn’t making life easy for McCoy either.

At 3-1, the Eagles sit atop the NFC East and if they can do that when the offense is a mess, it bodes well for their ability when it gets on track again. In order to be effective though, it needs McCoy to get his act together.

They get Lane Johnson back this week, and that should be a big help, but it comes down to McCoy trying to do too much. Right now he and head coach Chip Kelly need to bring it back to basics, cut down on the stretch plays which aren’t working often enough and find a way to get McCoy the ball in space so he can get to the second level.

Home against the surprisingly soft defense the St. Louis Rams have been trotting out, McCoy should be able to get right. But he’s been so off his game, it wouldn’t shock us if he continued to struggle.

We’ll be watching over the course of the month and see what, if anything, McCoy can do.
