New Orleans Saints waive Khairi Fortt

The New Orleans Saints have announced that they waived 2014 fourth-round draft pick, linebacker Khairi Fortt. Fortt has been on the injured reserve, preparing to return after Week 8, which makes you wonder why they cut the rookie.

Fortt suffered a leg injury during the second game of the preseason and he was eligible to start practice with the Saints after their week six bye. The Saints had one short-term IR to give out, which puts a player on the IR for half of the season, and they gave it to Fortt, but now they’ve waived him before that time is up. Fortt was not dropped to make space on the roster, because he wasn’t being counted against the 53-man roster while on the IR.

Fortt is a 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker that came out of the University of California. He had 62 tackles in his only season at Cal.

The New Orleans Saints currently have a defense that ranks 25th in the league. The Saints are 2-3 after a close win against division rival, Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Saints got off to a shaky 1-3 start after losses to the Falcons, Browns and Cowboys. The team’s defense clearly has room for improvement, forcing the question of why they would cut a young rookie linebacker.

The current Saints linebackers include Junior Galette, David Hawthorne, Curtis Loftin, Parys Haralson, Kyle Knox, Kasim Edebali, Ramon Humber and Ronald Powell.
