College football results against the spread week 6
By Mike Marteny
It certainly was a crazy week across the college football landscape. In fact, I think I had my worst week in five plus years of doing this. I did hit two of my three locks, so that is something I guess.

Let’s go ahead and get right to the carnage. Winners against the spread are in BOLD.
Central Florida at Houston(-2.5): MISS! Just the first of many games that I thought about going the other way, but talked myself out of it.
Florida Atlantic(-6.5) at Florida International: MISS! FIU may be one of the fastest improving teams in college. Either that, or they need a three hour weather delay in every game.
Arizona at Oregon(-23.5): MISS! I should have known better.
Louisville(-1.5) at Syracuse: HIT! Even I didn’t expect this to be a blowout.
San Diego State at Fresno State(-2.5): MISS! The Bulldog’s run defense was outstanding in this one.
Utah State at BYU(-20.5): MISS! You can’t put all of this in the injury to Taysom Hill. The Aggies were playing well even before he went out.
Florida at Tennessee(-2.5): MISS! Why didn’t the Gators stick with Driskel?
Texas A&M at Mississippi State(-2.5): HIT! I was expecting a closer game but the same result.
SMU at East Carolina(-41.5): MISS! So, I guess the QB really was the issue at SMU. I wonder if it will bring June Jones back?
Iowa State at Oklahoma State(-17.5): HIT! The half helped me here.
Purdue at Illinois(-9.5): MISS! Welcome to the bottom of the Big Ten(14), Illinois.
Marshall(-18.5) at Old Dominion: HIT! The Herd are now the favorites to finish the season undefeated, but will it get them to a New Years Six bowl?
Southern Mississippi at Middle Tennessee State(-17.5): MISS! I need to quit taking mediocre teams to cover larger spreads.
Ohio State(-7.5) at Maryland: MISS! It’s time to stop betting against the Buckeye offense.
Ball State at Army(-2.5): MISS! Can you blame me? The Knights were fresh off a loss to Yale!
Virginia Tech(-2.5) at North Carolina: HIT! This was about the only case of easy money on Saturday.
Eastern Michigan at Akron(-25.5): MISS! The half taketh away here…..
North Texas at Indiana(12.5): HIT! Indiana is still dangerous in the Big Ten(14) this year.
Massachusetts at Miami(OH)(-3.5): HIT! I may have got this, but how did UMass score 41 in the first half and get shut out in the second?
Tulsa at Colorado State(-17.5): HIT! This was my only good stretch of the day.
Oklahoma(-2.5) at TCU: MISS! If I had to do it again, I would still pick my team. Hats off to TCU and their defense, but I think this destroyed my mojo for the rest of the day.
North Carolina State at Clemson(14-5): HIT! I honestly didn’t think I Brent Venables defense was capable of shutting anyone out.
Wake Forest at Florida State(-38.5): MISS! On a day when so many top teams faltered, FSU covered their first spread of the year.
Baylor(-15.5) at Texas: MISS! If you would have told me that Petty would be stopped for the most part by Texas and that Baylor would still cover, I would have told you that you were nuts.
Ohio at Central Michigan(-3.5): MISS! The Bobcats are one of the most inconsistent teams this year.
Buffalo at Bowling Green(-3.5): MISS! Where did this come from??
New Mexico at UTSA(-17.5): MISS! Or this…….the Roadrunners are now 0-2 at home.
Wisconsin(-7.5) at Northwestern: MISS! Would you believe that the Wildcats are now in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten(14) West?
Stanford(-2.5) at Notre Dame: MISS! The Irish offense broke through late to win.
Alabama(-5.5) at Mississippi: MISS! Why did I talk myself out of this one too?
Navy(-3.5) at Air Force: MISS! It’s gotta be the helmet.
Oregon State(-6.5) at Colorado: MISS! Gah! Nice defense, Beavers…..
Vanderbilt at Georgia(-33.5): MISS! I was afraid of Georgia letting off the gas…..
Kansas at West Virginia(-27.5): MISS! The Mounties let up too.
Kent State at Northern Illinois(-24.5): MISS! This wasn’t even close….
South Alabama(-3.5) at Appalachian State: HIT! The Jags stopped my 13 game slide…..
Louisiana-Monroe at Arkansas State(-10.5): HIT! This was 0-0 at halftime. Good thing the Red Wolves woke up!
Georgia State at Louisiana-Lafayette(-15.5): HIT! The Eagles have been good about not being covered this year.
LSU at Auburn(-7.5): MISS! Wow, did anyone see that beatdown coming?
Idaho at Texas State(-16.5): MISS! There’s my reason not to take Texas State.
Michigan at Rutgers(-2.5): MISS! Damn blocked extra point!
UTEP at Louisiana Tech(-12.5): MISS! I knew better. I keep taking UTEP to not get covered, and they keep getting blown out. When will I learn?
UAB at Western Kentucky(-9.5): MISS! The Hilltopper D has been pretty bad.
Toledo(-6.5) at Western Michigan: MISS! Yuck!
Hawaii at Rice(-6.5): HIT! At least the Warriors are still flat on the mainland.
Memphis at Cincinnati(-3.5): MISS! Looks like I’m not picking against Memphis anymore.
Texas Tech at Kansas State(-13.5): HIT! The K-State offense is still a force.
Pittsburgh at Virginia(-4.5): HIT! This was a lot closer than I thought it would be, especially since the Cavs shut down Conner.
Miami(FL) at Georgia Tech(-1.5): MISS! I knew better. I need to quit second guessing. Weeks like this are exactly why I don’t bet on football.
Arizona State at USC(-12.5): MISS! Who knew the backup was just as good, if not better, than the starter?
South Carolina(-3.5) at Kentucky: MISS! Statement win for the Wildcats, and one of Spurrier’s worst losses.
Georgia Southern(-18.5) at New Mexico State: MISS! The Aggies have been decent at home.
UNLV at San Jose State(-8.5): HIT! Good thing I watched SJSU and UNLV games before picking, or I would have missed this too…..
Nebraska at Michigan State(-7.5): HIT! The furious fourth by the Huskers pulled this one out of the fire for me.
Boise State(-3.5) at Nevada: MISS! You can’t say that the Wolfpack didn’t have their chances.
Utah at UCLA(-12.5): HIT! The Bruins’ inconsistency on the offensive line finally caught up to them.
California at Washington State(-3.5): MISS! How do you lose a game when your QB throws for 734 yards? Better yet, how did this team beat Utah??
There you have it. I went 18-39 in the 57 games for my worst week in history. It wasn’t even close. This puts my season total at 124-165, which is a HUGE hole. Now my goal is just to get back to .500…
