2. The Jets are a mess

Speaking of the Jets, they are a complete mess. That organization is so screwed up you’d think it was owned by Malory Archer. After suffering a 31-0 pasting at the hands of the Chargers on Sunday, Rex Ryan’s bunch is now 1-4 on the season and has an atrocious point differential of minus-48.

Second-year quarterback Geno Smith has been truly awful this season. Through five games, the West Virginia product ranks 32nd in quarterback rating (69.3), is tied for the league-lead in interceptions (six) and ranks 30th in Total QBR (24.3). On Monday, reports surfaced that Smith also missed a team meeting on Saturday night while in San Diego. Though, in his defense, I also would have skipped a team meeting if I was a member of the Jets and was in San Diego for the night.

After completing just four of the 12 passes he threw on Sunday, Smith was benched at halftime. As a result, Rex Ryan learned a rule the Philadelphia Eagles figured out a few years ago: if you sign Michael Vick as your backup, eventually he’s going to wind up playing. He’s the Chekhov’s gun of quarterbacks.

The Jets have now lost four straight after eking out a 19-14 win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 1. The offense has been an embarrassment that even the league’s sixth-ranked defense can’t cover for, and the team as a whole is just awful.

Ryan has been the head coach of Gang Green since 2009 and this may be his worst squad. Other than Eric Decker and Chris Ivory, the team doesn’t have a single skill position player that could start on another NFL offense. New York mustered just 60 passing yards on Sunday and had 151 yards of total offense while averaging 2.8 yards per play. Sadly, things won’t get better any time soon.

I can guarantee you there are West African aid workers more excited about going to work tomorrow than Rex Ryan.
