Minnesota Wild sign Jonas Brodin to six-year extension
By Cory Buck
The Minnesota Wild have signed 21-year-old defenseman Jonas Brodin to a six-year extension worth $25 million, per Michael Russo of the Star Tribune. As the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft, Brodin was one of the youngest defenseman in the league when he began playing in the NHL at 19. He has played all but six regular season games in the last two seasons for the Wild, which gave both parties a good feel for how Brodin might grow into his role on the team.

Brodin tallied 8 goals and 11 assists in 79 games played last season with an even plus/minues. He averaged nearly 24 minutes per game as a top-four defenseman on the playoff-bound Wild. The deal currently appears team friendly because of the term. At six years, Brodin will be locked up until he’s 28 years old, as the contract won’t kick in until Brodin’s entry level contract expires this summer. That gives Minnesota plenty of time to see what Brodin’s prime looks like.
If Jonas Brodin can deliver on the promise show in his first two seasons, this deal will in fact be a steal. For now though, Brodin just has to keep plugging away in search of greater consistency. The Wild have a long season ahead of them with injury woes in net once more looming large over the rest of the team. For now the Wild have tided the storm well enough, but it will fall on Brodin and others along the blue line to hold the back end as the team continues to fight for a third straight playoff berth.
