The Baltimore Orioles are down in the ALCS, 3-0, which historically in MLB is the kiss of death. But Pedro Marinez, part of the 2004 Boston Red Sox, the only team in MLB history to have won a series where they were down 3-0, says the Orioles are as capable of making the comeback as those 2004 Red Sox were.

The Baltimore Orioles are in trouble. down 3-0 in the ALCS against the Kansas City Royals. In the MLB playoffs, a 3-0 series lead in the League Championship Series or the World Series effectively means the series is over, as only one team in MLB history has ever come back to win four straight, and the series: the 2004 Boston Red Sox. In ’04, the Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in the ALCS, four games to three, and one of the pitchers on that squad, Pedro Martinez, sees something similar in this year’s Orioles:

Perhaps Martinez, now an analyst with TBS, is simply trying to toss up a hot take to get people talking about what could very likely be a four-game sweep by the Royals. But Martinez has been around the game awhile, and he’s done some pretty good work as an analyst, so hopefully he’s not just tweeting nonsense to try to jack up ratings, and hopefully he actually believes that the Orioles are capable of overcoming this obstacle. And, of course, Pedro is only saying Baltimore is capable of coming back, not guaranteeing they will.

Martinez also offered some advice to the Orioles regarding what mentality might be useful to the team:

Game Four of the ALCS starts Wednesday at 4 p.m. Eastern in Kansas City, and Baltimore will send Miguel Gonzalez to the hill against the Royal’s Jason Vargas to stave off elimination.
