On third down and nine with just minutes left in the game, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was looking for Marques Colston on a pass in the middle of the field. The throw, a bit late, was picked off by Detroit Lions safety Glover Quin. Quin returned it to the New Orleans 14 yard line and put the Lions in position to take a 24-23 lead and win the game.
According to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com, Brees blames himself for the loss despite playing an otherwise good game.
"Saints quarterback Drew Brees took this crushing loss about as personally as I can ever remember him taking a loss, blaming himself for the interception he threw in the final minutes as Detroit rallied from a 23-10 deficit.“I think what’s so hard is the worst feeling in professional sports is when you feel like you let your team down. And that’s the way I feel right now with that interception,” said Brees, who was sensational for most of the first 56 minutes before throwing his only pick to safety Glover Quin on that third-and-9 play."
Brees had one more chance to win the game, getting the ball back with 1:48 left. However the Saints couldn’t convert on fourth-and-three after Brees’ pass to Robert Meachem fell incomplete.
For the game, Brees completed 28-of-45 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns and that interception and finished with a quarterback rating of 91.2. That late interception and incompletion on the final drive is clearly lingering, though, as the Saints fall to 2-4 on the season.
