The
used an efficient offense and big plays on special teams to upset the
28-26 at the Edward Jones Dome in what was the
upset of the day on Sunday afternoon.
The Rams scored on a fake punt and had a punt return while Austin Davis completed 18-of-21 passes for 152 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Russell Wilson was the star for the Seahawks. He was 23-of-36 for 313 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown.
The Seahawks got the scoring started early on a nine-play, 68-yard drive that resulted in a 24-yard field goal by Steven Hauschka. The Rams, however, quickly responded. Benjamin Cunningham returned the ensuing kick-off 75 yards to the Seahawks’ 31-yard line. Five plays later, rookie Tre Mason scored his first NFL touchdown on a six-yard run.
After making a stop, the Rams got the ball back and Cunnigham made another big play. This time, he caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Davis capping off a nine-play, 74-yard drive to make it 14-3 Rams.
The Seahawks were again forced to punt after Wilson was sacked on third down, shutting down what was a promising drive. The Rams put both Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin back so they believed he was getting the ball as he ran to left side. Instead, Bailey fielded it and took it to the house.
The Seahawks were able to drive down a field goal before the half came to a close, closing the gap to 21-6 at the half.
The two teams traded stops in the second half and on the Seahawks’ second possession, they had their best drive of the game. Wilson took them 82 yards in 12 plays. Wilson scored fro 19 yards out on a keeper, cutting the lead to 21-13.
After another stop, the Seahawks began the fourth quarter with the ball. Wilson again took off, this time making a 52-yard run. After a Marshawn Lynch touchdown was called back for holding three plays later, Wilson found Cooper Helfet for a 19-yard touchdown. However, his two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.
It looked like the Rams had lost all momentum but that wasn’t the case. Davis calmly led the Rams down the field, completing four-of-five pieces, culminating in a four-yard touchdown pass to Lance Kendricks, putting the Rams up 28-19. The Seahawks quickly answered, going 80 yards for a touchdown. Wilson hit Doug Baldwin for a nine-yard score.
The Seahawks then seemingly stopped the Rams, forcing a punt with over two minutes to go. The Rams, however, faked the punt. Punter Johnny Hekker found Cunningham for an 18-yard game and a first down.
On third-and-one with a chance to clinch the game, Mason raced for a first down but the ball popped out. The Rams were able to recover the fumble and run out the clock for the win.
The Seahawks will travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers next week while the Rams will make the quick trip to Kansas City to battle the Chiefs.
