Tre Mason-RB-St. Louis Rams (2.3%)

Mason has quickly emerged as a threat to take over the Rams backfield and is a great pickup with tons of upside.  He has higher upside than McKinnon, but he is still in a timeshare so the risk is higher.  If you have solid options already at RB and are swinging for the fences, Mason is the right fit for your team.  If you need reliable production from week-to-week, McKinnon is a little bit safer since he already controls the timeshare.

Mason was inactive the first five weeks of this NFL season but quickly has shown he’s the most dynamic back in the Rams backfield. Last week against the tough Seahawks defense, Mason led the team with 18 carries and totaled 85 yards and a touchdown.  Mason is a little limited, though, since he is completely uninvolved in the passing game at this point.  He doesn’t quite have the job secured yet, but his upside is so high that he needs to be owned in every league.

In 2013, the Rams drafted Zac Stacy who wasn’t involved until the middle of the season but then secured the main share of the Rams backfield for the second half quickly emerging as a RB2.  Mason seems to be following a similar track, but he still has lots of room to grow before he’s an every week start.  Mason could be limited especially if the Rams fall behind and are forced to go pass-heavy.  He’ll be tough to play in matchups where that’s possible, but he does have some favorable opportunities ahead of him as well.  This week, the Rams face the Chiefs before the schedule gets tougher with the 49ers, Cardinals, Broncos, and Chargers.
