No. 20-17

20. Austin Davis – St. Louis Rams

Austin Davis is the biggest surprise of the NFL season when it comes to QBs. Not only has Davis done a great job filling in for an injured Sam Bradford this season, you can make a strong argument that Davis is playing as well or even better than Bradford ever has. Davis is completing 66% of his passes for 7.4 YPA, nine TDs and four INTs. If Davis continues to grow and improve as he gets more playing time the Rams will have to strongly consider making him their long term answer at QB.

19. Carson Palmer – Arizona Cardinals

Carson Palmer missed several games due to injury but seems to be back and ready to roll for the surprising leaders of the NFC West. If Palmer is able to stay healthy and continue to avoid costly interceptions that have plagued him in recent years he may find himself shooting up this list. His QBR is already in the top ten in the NFL. I want to see him prove it in a few more games, but Palmer looks like a good fit with Bruce Arians offense.

18. Nick Foles – Philadelphia Eagles

I’m sure I’ll catch flack from Philly fans for having Nick Foles ranked this low. While he does put up lots of yards (271.3 YPG) and several TDs (10) in Chip Kelly’s high powered offense, he is only completing 59.5% of his passes, has the third most interceptions in the NFL with seven, and actually has Pro Football Focus’s fourth LOWEST grade (-10.6) of all regular starting QBs. I’m still of the belief that Philly’s success is more about Kelly’s scheme than Foles abilities. I’m open to him proving me wrong though.

17. Alex Smith – Kansas City Chiefs

As an admitted Chiefs homer I can tell you without question that the one thing keeping Alex Smith from becoming a great QB is his hesitation to throw the football at times. Smith’s accuracy is good and contrary to popular belief his arm strength is fine too. Smith simply refuses to throw the ball unless he knows it will be completed. While protecting the football is a good thing, Smith’s insistence to play it safe also limits his upside and climbing up this list much farther.
