Although the New York Knicks are clearly looking to get back into the postseason this year, it seems clear that Carmelo Anthony re-signed with the Knicks because he believes they can add superstars in the future. With big men Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani set to come off the books after the 2014-2015 season, Carmelo Anthony may be right.
Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders believes Memphis Grizzlies’ center Marc Gasol is a perfect fit.
“I think Marc Gasol would be perfect for New York,” Kennedy writes. “He’d help them on both ends of the floor and it seems like he’d be perfect in the triangle offense.”
Marc Gasol may not be attainable – he has expressed a desire to stay in Memphis and they have done the same. However, Detroit Pistons’ big man Greg Monroe almost certainly is.
“Monroe would be interesting too since he’s very skilled,” writes Kennedy. “Next summer is going to be very interesting for the Knicks. We’re probably going to hear a ton of rumors between now and then about New York’s offseason plan since they have a ton of money to spend and Phil Jackson/Carmelo Anthony ready to recruit.”
Although he has denied that he wants out of Detroit, Greg Monroe simply signed his qualifying offer in order to become an unrestricted free agent in 2015 rather than signing a long-term deal.
Greg Monroe averaged 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 65.7% from the free throw line last season. Greg Monroe has put up 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 50.8% from the floor and 67.8% from the foul line in his career.
