Jake Long was lost last season to a torn ACL and it appears that history is repeating itself for the former No. 1 overall draft pick.

The St. Louis Rams drafted a left tackle high this year in the NFL Draft, which is looking like a good move considering how well their free agent signing from last year is working out.

Sunday’s loss for the Rams at the hand of the Kansas City Chiefs was a lot more painful than just what appeared on the scoreboard. Offensive tackle Jake Long suffered what the team fears is a torn ACL, which would end another season well short for the former top draft pick.

This is really bad news for Long as it could mark the end of his career. That’s not to say he won’t return from this injury, but it would be the second straight season in which his year was ended early over a torn ACL. That’s not something to unjust skip over when considering Long as a lineman, as he may be done in St. Louis altogether. Right now, the win concern is Long’s health, as his ACL just can’t withstand the wear-and-tear the NFL requires which could make life after football hard. As far as what the Rams will do in the meantime, Yahoo! NFL insider Eric Edholm believes the team will turn to rookie Greg Robinson if Long is indeed lost for the season.

St. Louis took Robinson with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft — passing on a quarterback they very much need right now — which means the pressure would be on for success to be rather immediate.
