NFL QB Power Rankings: Ranking The Starters Through Week 8
No. 20-17
20. Andy Dalton – Cincinnati Bengals (+1)
Andy Dalton didn’t put up fantastic numbers against the Ravens last week, but he does deserve credit for leading the Bengals to a win against their division rivals without his best weapon AJ Green. So Dalton moves up one spot, but he still hasn’t really impressed enough to jump into the upper half of the rankings. This looks like the same old Andy Dalton and come playoff time it’s going to take more than that for the Bengals to be contenders.
19. Nick Foles – Philadelphia Eagles (-1)
I’ve come to expect that I’m going to catch grief for ranking Nick Foles so low on these rankings and I’m guessing Eagles fans that read these rankings on a regular basis have come to expect me ranking Foles below where other rankings might have him. I continue to think the yards he piles up are more a product of Chip Kelly’s system than Foles abilities as a QB. My guess is that a year from now when someone else takes over at QB in Philly the same fans that are telling me I’m an idiot will be talking about how much better Philly will be now that they have ________ at QB. Have at me Eagles fans!
18. Jay Cutler – Chicago Bears (-3)
I really thought Jay Cutler was going to have his best season ever this season, but it’s just not happening. Cutler has the talent to be ranked so much higher than this, but until he starts to utilize the weapons around him and actually win games he’s going to continue to drop. To have an arm like Cutler has and WRs like he has and to be only averaging 4.7 “air yards” per completion (Brian Hoyer was at 8.2) is inexcusable.
17. Alex Smith – Kansas City Chiefs
Alex Smith holds steady at number seventeen on this list after a conservative yet efficient performance in KC’s blow out win over the Rams. Conservative yet efficient could be what Alex Smith has on his tombstone. On one hand he has the lowest “air yards” per completion of any QB with multiple starts on this list at just 4.1. However, he also has the highest percentage of passes that converted third downs in all the NFL. So he throws shorter than everyone, but converts third downs better than anyone. He’s not always fun to watch, but it just works.
