Houston Texans (4-5)

Have the wheels finally come off the wagon for Houston? Are we at the point where noticing how bad the quarterback play is might be worth it?

Because the defense is not getting it done the way it was early in the season and the offense just can’t keep up.

Of course, it would help the defense if it wasn’t on the field all day, which just brings us back to the question of the the quarterback position.

Head coach Bill O’Brien chose to handwave the position in the draft and free agency, hoping he could limp along with Ryan Fitzpatrick for the season and get a shot at a quarterback next year.

Well, we assume that’s the case, because he won’t say that out loud. So the scary thing for Houston fans is the idea that he could make no moves going into next season as well. And if you think that’s impossible, because nobody would ignore such an obvious need, look over at the New York Jets secondary and GM John Idzik’s choices.

At some point we should see either Ryan Mallet or Tom Savage—because why not find out what they can do?

The danger is that Fitzpatrick can do “just enough” to win a game here or there and with games against Tennessee and Jacksonville, that might be enough. After all, will Savage or Mallett be able to overcome the Colts, Browns or Bengals?

Still, they should see what they have in their backups because what they have in their starter isn’t pretty.
