Chicago White Sox SS Alexi Ramirez has become a very popular name, as several teams have approached the club about a possible trade for the All-Star

In the classroom that is the baseball trade rumor mill, Chicago White Sox SS Alexi Ramirez is vying for the role of Most Popular, as the All-Star’s name has been linked to a variety of teams, including the New York Mets, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

All three teams have the one thing the White Sox most covet this offseason: young starting pitchers. The Mets may be at the forefront, as Chicago has eyed right-handers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero as possible centerpieces. Ramirez’s value is further enhanced by the mere $20 million left on his contract, which expires after the 2016 season.

Ramirez was named to the All-Star team for the first time in his seven-year career in 2014, batting .273 with 15 homers, 74 RBI and 21 stolen bases. Last season marked the third straight campaign of at least 20 stolen bases for the 33-year-old, who has also become one of the most durable players in the game, having appeared in at least 156 games in each of the past five seasons.

The Yankees obviously have a hole at short (say, what happened to that Jeter fella who played there?), while the Dodgers are bracing for the potential loss of Hanley Ramirez to free agency.

A trade of Ramirez will push up the timetable for Tim Anderson, the White Sox’s first round pick in the 2013 draft. It’s unlikely Anderson would be ready for Opening Day, forcing Chicago to sign a one-year stopgap.
