Capitals’ Ovechkin Makes Illegal Head Hit Against Chicago’s Hjalmarsson
Alexander Ovechkin’s hit on Chicago defenseman Nick Hjalmarsson does not go over well with Johnny Oduya
In Friday night’s matchup between the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks, it seems like Alexander Ovechkin was up to his usual obscenely huge hits tricks.

The Capitals captain made a high, illegal hit to Blackhawks defenseman Nick Hjalmarsson, clipping the skater in the face with his elbow before knocking him into the boards. Hjalmarsson, who already looks like he lost a fight due to a puck to the face a few weeks back, went down immediately. At the time of the hit, the Blackhawks had been winning- the home team had a 1-0 lead to close out the first period.
It seems that Chicago defenseman Johnny Oduya was having none of Ovechkin’s nonsense, though; as soon as the hit was made, he grabbed Ovechkin from behind and pulled him away from Hjalmarsson. A scrum ensued on both sides, although Ovechkin was given the penalty for his illegal hit.
The Capitals took home a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks, but gave fans quite the preview of the kind of bloodbath that might be witnessed the New Year’s Day. The Caps and the Hawks will play each other at the Washington Nationals ballpark in Washington, D.C., where the Capitals are hosting the 2015 Winter Classic.
