Most Valuable Player

  1. Anthony Davis, PF New Orleans Pelicans – Okay. This is getting ridiculous. Anthony Davis is leading the NBA in PER by more than eight full points (37.11), and his raw numbers jump off the page to the tune of 25.2 points, 11.7 rebounds and a league-leading 4.0 blocks per game. There is no “knock” on Davis for lack of team success, either, as he is leading the Pelicans to a 5-4 record at the time of this post, and at 21 years old, the league is simply on fire for Anthony Davis.
  2. LeBron James, SF/PF Cleveland Cavaliers – You may remember that LeBron James did not crack the top three in our initial rankings, but on cue, he responded with an explosive week to lift Cleveland to a 5-4 record with numbers worthy of MVP consideration. James is currently second in the league in scoring (27.1 points per game) to Kobe Bryant, and he lands in the top-10 in VORP and PER while averaging nearly 7 rebounds and 7 assists per game. The Cavs still need time to come around, but LeBron has awakened.
  3. Stephen Curry, PG Golden State Warriors – Curry’s true shooting is an obscene 63.4%, and at this point, the 26-year-old is on pace for easily the best season of his career. It certainly does not hurt that the Warriors are 8-2 and outperforming expectations, but Curry has been as good as advertised, and in pairing with Klay Thompson, Golden State appears to be the runaway winner in the “best backcourt in the NBA” discussion.
