Stanley Kubrick’s recreation of Stephen King’s The Shining is most well-known for Nicholson’s breakthrough performance and it’s inside looks like this that really highlight what a master Jack Nicholson was of his craft at the time. You do not want to get in his way even as he’s prepping for that role, taking a few air-swings at a nearby bed with his axe before the director calls for film to roll.
Stephen King’s works are seeing a resurgence of interest thanks to the announcement of film adaptations of The Stand, among others. While he’s always been one of the biggest novelists in his era and one whose works have easily translated to film, none of that silver screen success would be possible without great actors like Jack Nicholson. As we see above, Nicholson takes that responsibility as seriously as King does his writing.
